President Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, but it took close to three years before the word finally spread to Galveston, Texas, and the last slaves were granted legal free status on June 19, 1865. Since that day, “Juneteenth” has been celebrated as “African-American Independence Day,” first in Texas, and in recent years, across the country.
